There's a version of the thermal optic world where you buy one unit for one job. You mount it on the rifle, you leave it there, and it does the one thing you bought it for.
That's not the world the Tevin Sentinel S2 lives in.
What we've built and what the new capabilities on the S2 make possible in a way that nothing else under a thousand dollars can touch is a four-ounce thermal device that adapts to how you actually live. Most people don't run one platform and one mission. You've got a home defense shotgun. You carry a pistol. You run a carbine. You have a precision rifle for long-range work. Maybe you've got a tactical helmet for property patrol. The thermal optic you actually use is the one that moves with you across those platforms, not the one that lives permanently on one gun.
Here are the six ways the Tevin Sentinel S2 can be configured and what each one is actually for.
1. Handheld
This is where most people start, and it's the configuration that teaches you the most about how thermal actually works.
Handheld use is your reconnaissance tool. You step outside at night, glass the tree line, check the pasture, walk the fence. No firearm required. No mounting required. The Tevin Sentinel S2 in your hand is your eyes in the dark, and at sub-five ounces, you'll forget you're holding it.
The three power magnification on the updated S2 gives you genuine reach when you're doing a property scan from elevation. The four color palettes let you dial in whatever gives you the cleanest read on your terrain I personally run white hot for open ground and switch to a contrast palette when I'm in timber or mixed cover where temperature variation makes sorting signals harder.

2. Pistol Mounted
This is the configuration that surprises people the most, because most of the thermal industry doesn't talk about pistol-mounted thermal at all.
Here's the honest case for it: if you're a prepared citizen whose primary defensive tool at 2 AM is a pistol, you don't have the luxury of grabbing a rifle and mounting a thermal to it before you check why the dogs are going. The threat timeline doesn't work that way. But if your pistol is already equipped with the Tevin Sentinel S2, you pick it up and you have thermal capability from the first second.
The Tevin Sentinel S2's compact form factor and minimal weight make pistol mounting genuinely viable in a way that larger, heavier thermal units are not. Balance matters on a handgun in a way it matters less on a long gun, and at four ounces, the S2 is not significantly altering your draw or your handling.

3. Shotgun Mounted

Most thermal weapon sights are sized for rifle platforms with rifle-length rails and rifle-weight tolerances. For the homeowner running a defensive shotgun, this means you can put thermal capability on the gun you've already chosen for home defense without switching platforms. 4. 45-Degree Offset
The 45-degree offset is the setup that has built some serious word-of-mouth for the Tevin Sentinel S2 among carbine and short-barreled rifle users, and for good reason.
Mounting the S2 at 45 degrees on an offset rail gives you thermal capability without removing your primary optic from the equation. You're running your red dot or LPVO normally. When you want thermal, you cant the rifle 45 degrees and you're looking through the Tevin Sentinel S2. Transition back to zero degrees and you're back on your primary optic. The whole movement takes less time than it takes to read this sentence.
For property defense on a carbine, this setup is difficult to beat. Your primary optic handles everything inside 100 yards at night that you can engage with positive identification in ambient or artificial light. The 45-degree thermal handles the detection problem you're scanning with thermal, identifying targets, and transitioning to your primary optic for the actual aiming solution.
It also eliminates the dedicated thermal rifle sight cost equation entirely. You don't need a separate thermal weapon sight. The Tevin Sentinel S2 on a 45-degree offset rail serves both the detection and the close-range target identification function at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated thermal scope.
5. Primary Red Dot
This is the configuration that gets the most questions, so let me explain what it means and what it's actually for.
Running the Tevin Sentinel S2 as a primary red dot means it's your primary aiming device typically at short to medium range where thermal imaging resolution is sufficient for both target identification and aiming. Think defensive applications inside 100 yards, predator hunting at moderate ranges, or any scenario where you want a dedicated thermal aiming solution without carrying two optics.
The three power magnification on the S2 gives you options here that one-power-only thermal units can't match. One power for room-clearing distances and close-range defensive work. Two to three power when you need to identify what you're aiming at a bit further out before you make the decision to engage.
This is a simpler, more streamlined setup than the offset or diving board configurations one device, one job, mounted on top of the receiver. If your use case is consistent and the range envelope matches what the S2 delivers, running it as your primary makes a lot of sense.
6. Helmet-Mounted with the IPS J-Arm
The newest configuration option and the one that gets you fully hands-free thermal capability is the helmet mount using Sentinel Optics USA's newly released IPS J-Arm system.
We've covered this in detail in a separate post, but the summary is this: the IPS J-Arm positions the Tevin Sentinel S2 in front of one eye on an adjustable arm that swings down when you need it and out of the way when you don't. The IPS interface holds the unit in a comfortable, stable position right at your eye for extended use.
This setup is for mobility. Property patrol. Livestock security. Extended surveillance. Any application where your hands need to be free and you need sustained thermal awareness of your environment without holding a device.
Critical note if you run the helmet mount: Turn the brightness all the way down before you put the unit to your eye. At close eye distance, low brightness gives you a better image and protects your dark adaptation. This is the most important operational tip for helmet-mounted thermal and it's the thing most first-time users get wrong.
What Makes All Six Possible
The reason all six configurations are viable and the reason no other thermal in this price range can say the same comes down to a few things working together.
Sub-five ounces. Weight is the killer on versatile mounting. A twelve-ounce thermal device is not going on your pistol. A six-ounce device is marginal on your shotgun and will wear on you in a helmet mount. At four ounces, the Tevin Sentinel S2 doesn't limit your options based on platform weight tolerance.

Choosing Your Starting Configuration
If you're new to the Tevin Sentinel S2 and not sure where to start, my honest recommendation is to begin in handheld. Spend a few nights learning how thermal works in your actual environment. Then decide which mounted configuration matches the mission you're trying to solve.
Most S2 owners end up using two or three configurations regularly once they understand what's possible. That's by design. The whole idea is that you own one quality thermal device and it adapts to your life not the other way around.

For coyote-sized animals on open ground in a typical ambient temperature environment, expect solid identification at 100-150 yards. Detection out to 250+ yards depending on conditions.
Can I run the Tevin Sentinel S2 with night vision? Yes Tevin Sentinel S2 functions as a thermal complement to a night vision setup. In a helmet-mounted configuration, you can run thermal on the J-Arm alongside a night vision device for full-spectrum capability. This is a common setup for serious property security applications.
